What Never To Ask Your Wedding Photographer: Insider Tips

Planning your wedding is exciting, but if we’re being honest, it’s a bit scary too! You have a million questions running through your mind, and you may be thinking about asking your photographer every little thing. However, some questions can create awkward moments or even misunderstandings. Knowing what not to ask your wedding photographer can save you stress, build a better connection and make your big day run smoothly.

In this post, I will dive into why certain questions are better left unasked. I will explore why understanding our role matters, how to respect our expertise, and what kinds of questions are more helpful instead. Let’s make sure you get the best out of this partnership.

“Can You Give Me a Discount?”

Asking for a discount might accidentally underestimate the effort, time, and talent that photographers put into capturing your special day.

Why Discounts Can Be Tricky

We spend hours planning, shooting, editing, and ensuring every detail is perfect. When you ask for a discount, it’s like saying, “Can you do the same amazing work but for less?” It’s not just the hours we spend on your wedding day, it’s the weeks of work behind the scenes.

The Hidden Costs of Photography

A lot goes on behind the scenes that you may not see. High-quality cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, editing software, training, and even transportation all add up. These investments are what ensure your photos look magical and timeless. Discounts can make it harder for us to cover these essential costs.

It’s About More Than Price

The images captured will be with you forever, reminding you of the happiest moments of your life. Instead of focusing on cost, think about the value and experience the photographer brings. If you go for the cheapest option you might not be getting the quality you deserve.

Try This Instead!

If your budget is tight, discuss it openly with your photographer. Many of us have various packages available at different price levels, so you can find an option that suits you. You might also want to ask about payment options or if they have reduced coverage to match your budget.

“Can You Edit Us to Look Perfect?”

It’s tempting to think we can wave a wand (or click a mouse) and make every little flaw disappear. But here’s the truth: asking your wedding photographer to “edit you to look perfect” is like saying, “Can you change who I am?”. And let’s be honest, do you really want to erase the real you from your wedding photos?

Photographers Aren’t Plastic Surgeons

Editing is all about enhancing what’s already there. We can tweak the lighting, smooth out a blemish, or make colours pop. But turning you into someone unrecognisable? That’s not what wedding photography is about.

Your wedding photos should tell your story and be authentic, full of love, and perfectly imperfect. If we over-edit, we risk losing the raw emotion and beauty that make your photos feel real.

Try This Instead!

Instead of asking for perfection, embrace confidence! On your big day, you’ll be glowing with happiness, love, and excitement, and that’s something no amount of editing can recreate.

“Can You Only Edit Photos the Way I Want?”

This might not give you the results you’re hoping for. When you hire a wedding photographer, you’re not just paying for someone to click a button on a camera. You’re hiring an artist. Editing is a big part of our creative process, and asking us to only edit photos your way can sometimes feel like telling a painter how to mix their colours.

Of course, your photographer wants you to love your photos. But we have our unique style for a reason. It’s how we stand out and create the magic you fell in love with when you saw our portfolio.

Try This Instead!

If you have specific preferences, talk about them before booking. Share examples of edits you like, and ask if we can incorporate those elements while keeping our style. Most photographers are open to tweaking things to suit your taste, but there’s a line between collaboration and control.

“Can You Edit Out Everything I Don’t Like?”

Photo editing isn’t a magical wand that can erase every single thing you dislike. Sure, a stray hair or an annoying pimple can be fixed, but completely changing the look of a photo? That’s a whole different story. Editing is an art, and it’s meant to enhance your photos, not completely change them.

Focus on the Day, Not Perfection

Perfection is overrated. Those candid moments, like messy hair, windblown dresses or teary smiles, are what make your wedding day real and unforgettable. Editing every detail can take away that authenticity. Your wedding photos are a reflection of your love story, not a photoshopped fantasy.

Try This Instead!

Asking us what’s possible is a great first step. We will tell you what’s realistic to edit.

Here’s what’s doable:

  • Light Retouching: To enhance natural beauty and smooth out small imperfections.
  • Colour Adjustments: To match the vibe and mood of your day.
  • Minor Fixes: Like removing a random photobomber in the background.

“Can You Send Me All the Raw Photos?”

Raw photos are unedited, untouched files straight from the camera. Think of them as the “ingredients” of a recipe. Just like raw dough isn’t the same as a baked cake, raw photos aren’t ready to be enjoyed. They need editing magic to bring out their best.

Why Photographers Don’t Share Raw Photos

  • They’re Incomplete: Raw files are not the retouched, colourful, pretty images you’ll see in a photographer’s portfolio. Sharing them would be like handing over unfinished artwork.
  • It’s About Quality, Not Quantity: We carefully curate and edit your gallery to tell your wedding story in the best way possible. Sending raw files could include duplicates, blurry shots, or awkward angles. Trust your photographer to deliver only the good stuff.
  • It’s Part of Their Creative Process: Editing isn’t just a technical task, it’s part of a photographer’s style. What makes our work unique is our technique of changing colours, lighting and tones. Giving raw files away can feel like handing over an unfinished masterpiece.

  Try This Instead!

Ask about our editing process, not raw photos. How do we choose the best shots? What’s our timeline for delivering the final images? These questions show you care about our craft and want the best results.

“Can You Copy Another Photographer’s Style?”

When you’re planning your wedding, it’s easy to scroll through Instagram or Pinterest and fall in love with a specific photographer’s style. You might think, “Can my photographer just copy this?”

Every Photographer Has a Unique Vision

We are artists, and our style reflects our creative vision. When you hire a wedding photographer, you’re trusting our creative eye and expertise. Asking us to copy someone else’s style could kinda squash our creativity and the end product might not come across as genuine.

The Real Magic Happens in The Moment

What you see in other photographers’ work isn’t just about their editing. It’s the combination of the couple, the setting, the emotions, and the lighting. Your wedding day will have its own magic. A skilled photographer will highlight your moments, not recreate someone else’s.

Try This Instead!

Being inspired is different from copying. Show us pictures you love to help us understand your preferences. But instead of saying, “I want this exact look,” try explaining what you like about the photo. Is it the candid smiles? The warm colours? The moody vibe? This gives us a chance to create something that’s uniquely yours.

“Can My Guest Be Your Second Photographer?”

I get it, your cousin just bought a fancy camera, or your best friend loves snapping photos at events. Naturally, you might wonder: Can they help as a second photographer during my wedding? This is a question that professional photographers often hope you won’t ask.

Your Photographer Has a Team for a Reason

We choose very carefully our second shooter based on skill, experience and style. Even if a guest is super excited, they might not have the skills to keep up with a professional team and produce those amazing, top-notch photos.

Try This Instead!

Your wedding day is meant for your guests to relax and celebrate with you, not work. Encourage them to take casual and fun photos, but without interfering with the professionals.

If you’re worried about capturing every moment, ask your photographer if they can bring a second shooter. They’ll work as a team, ensuring no moment is missed.

“Can You Just Use My Phone for Some Shots?”

We invest in top-notch gear designed to handle all kinds of lighting, movement, and angles. A phone, no matter how good, can’t match the quality of professional cameras.

Editing Phone Photos Is a Nightmare

We edit photos with professional software to make them look polished and cohesive. Phone photos, even with filters, don’t have the same flexibility for editing. Mixing phone shots with high-quality images can make your wedding album feel inconsistent.

Try This Instead!

If you’re looking for some casual phone snaps, let your guests take care of that! Guests can capture fun, spontaneous moments without interfering with your photographer’s work. Bonus: You get candid shots and professional photos.

“Can You Stay Longer for Free?”

Asking for free time can make us feel undervalued. We have worked for years to improve our skills to make your experience seamless. Photographers, like anyone, deserve to be fairly compensated for their time and expertise.

Extra Time Means Extra Cost

Most photographers offer packages with specific timelines. If your wedding runs late or you want extra coverage, it’s perfectly okay to ask for an extension, but be prepared to pay for it. Most photographers are happy to accommodate when they’re compensated fairly. It demonstrates that you appreciate our skills and hard work.

Try This Instead!

If you think your wedding might run late, talk to your photographer early. Many photographers can be pretty flexible with their packages, or they might just give you a flat rate for any extra hours you need. If you’re unsure, book an extra hour. It’s better to have more time than to feel rushed.

“Can You Change the Weather for Our Photos?”

Let’s be real; no one controls the weather. (Not even us, photographers, no matter how magical our cameras seem!) So, what happens when the sky doesn’t cooperate? Here’s the good news: great wedding photos don’t need perfect weather.

Rain Isn’t a Problem, It’s a Dreamy Opportunity

Rain can be magical. Imagine a gentle drizzle sparkling in the light or a romantic kiss under a shared umbrella. Some of the most breathtaking photos happen in unexpected weather. Plus, wet pavement? It reflects light like a natural mirror, creating unique effects no sunny day can match.

Clouds Are Your Best Friend

Overcast skies may seem gloomy, but I love them. Why? Because clouds diffuse the light, making your skin look amazing and eliminating harsh shadows. Think of it like nature’s softbox; lovely, natural, and ideal for portraits.

Wind Adds Drama and Movement

A little wind may mess up your hair, but it can make your photos look dynamic and cinematic. Imagine your veil flowing dramatically or your dress catching the breeze. These moments can bring a sprinkle of charm and enchantment to your photos.

Try This Instead!

We can’t change the weather, but we can change how you feel about it. Couples who fully enjoy the moment, rain or shine, end up with photos that are joyful and real.Instead of asking if we can change the weather in your photos, ask us how we will make the most of it.

Final Thoughts: The Right Questions Make All the Difference

When planning your wedding, the questions you ask your photographer can make or break your experience. Instead of focusing on what not to ask, shift your energy to asking the right ones. Think about what matters most to you, like timelines, style, special moments, or even their favourite wedding story. By asking thoughtful questions, you’ll not only understand how we work but also build a stronger connection.

Remember, we are there to capture your love story, not just show up with a camera. So, don’t hesitate to ask about how we can make your vision come to life.

I am so grateful that you came on this journey with me. If you liked what you read and are interested in more of my work, please check my portfolio here. I want to know what you think. Thank you very much for your valuable support!
